At Springfield Central State School, our goal is for emerging readers and writers to be explicitly and systematically taught the alphabetic code, skills and conceptual knowledge required to read and write the English language.
To support the explicit teaching of phonics in Prep and Year 1, we use an evidence-based programme called Sounds-Write. Our early years teachers are trained Sounds-Write practitioners who are skilled in teaching structured synthetic phonics.
You can learn more about how you can support your child to read and write by signing up to this FREE course, 'Help your child to read and write'. This parent-friendly course contains lots of short videos showing how you can support your child with their reading and writing, and includes advice about how to correct common errors children make. https://www.udemy.com/course/help-your-child-to-read-and-write/
In Prep and Year 1, teachers send home Phonics Practice as an optional homework activity. We encourage families to engage with, and complete the Phonics Practice homework at home to support the teaching of phonics.
