Seven Steps to Writing Success

Seven Steps to Writing Success is one component of the SCSS Explicit Teaching of Writing programme.

Seven Steps is developed by author Jen McVeity. She has designed the programme around the chunking concept, similar to the way we play sport.  e.g. when learning to play tennis you must first learn the individual skills then practise the skills over and over until they go into muscle memory.  Finally, we put the skills together in a game. Similarly,  we will chunk the concepts for students rather than asking them to initially write the whole story (or play the whole tennis match).
The Seven Steps are:
5 – Show, Don’t Tell
6 – Ban the Boring
7 – Exciting Endings
As each skill is taught explicitly to our students, you will find links above for parent tips. We encourage all parents to download these and use them at home to help your child become a better writer.
Please note, Prep students will begin this programme in Semester 2.
