A huge thanks to the parents that attended our ‘Reading with Children—Parent Session’ today.  Lee Denton from Literacy Solutions addressed the following key points:
· Children must see parents reading
· Children must LOVE reading and associate it with a warm and loving environment
· Speaking and listening are exceptionally important before reading development
· Children should be exposed to  1 000 pictures books before starting Prep
· A love of reading and concepts of print should be developed before starting Prep
· It is not enough to just read the words (decode) - children also need to comprehend and make sense of what they have read
· Before reading a book, activate prior knowledge.  Look at the title and the pictures and predict what the book may be about
· Our goal is to develop automaticity of reading and ensure reading is fluent and not stilted
· THREE SENTENCES TO ASK CHILDREN WHEN READING: Does it make sense? Does it look right? Does it sound right?
